Chat Information, Common Problems, and Acceptable Use Policy

Chat Network information

Our chat room is hosted on the Starchat Network. Below is the server information if you wish to connect with your IRC client.

Primary server: Cryptic.GA.US.StarChat.Net
Secondary server: irc.starchat.net (random server)
channel: #progressivesoundscapes
port: 6667

Common problems

1. Noone can see what I'm saying in the chat room.
Starchat now requires AOL, Compuserv, and Wal-mart Connect users to register their nicknames. For an explanation and detailed instruction on how to resolve this issue goto http://www.starchat.net/aol/index.htm.

2. After I put in my username and hit the chat button I just get a blank window, no chat program comes up even if I wait a long time.
Most likely the problem is that Java is not installed on your machine. Due to recent court battles between Sun Microsystems and Microsoft, new installations of Windows no longer include the java support files (called Virtual Machine or JRE) needed to run our applet.
To resolve this issue you can do one of the following:

a. Go to http://www.java.com and download Java from Sun Microsystems. This will add the JRE to your system and add a plug in to your browser so the applet will work.

b. If your browser is Internet Explorer you can install and use Netscape 7.1. Netscape installations come with Java.

c. Download a third party IRC client. Two such clients are available thru the starchat website at www.starchat.net. Click either the StarMIRC or StarPIRCH button to get the software.

3. I get a message saying that I need to identify myself when I enter the chatroom.
The nickname you have chosen has been registered by another user on the starchat network. You can change your nickname from inside the chat program by typing:
/nick YourNewName

To get more information on the nickserv service and learn how to register your own nickname go to http://www.starchat.net/services/nickserv.htm.

If you have other problems or questions please email Dave (dave@netdotmusic.com) and we will try to the best of our ability to get you chatting.
